Calvin Tang is probably Malaysia’s top mobile phone virus expert

Sabahans in particular and Malaysians in general can be proud of Calvin “The Bible” Tang, 18, our very own, homegrown mobile phone / cell phone virus expert.

According to The Star on 5th February 2007, he is so good that he has earned an internship from top US antivirus firm, McAfee.

This ex Tshung Tsin Secondary School student used the Internet an average 5 hours daily to conduct his R&D. Well, who said success comes without hard work? Google “Calvin Tang virus,” and you can find many references on him at the forums he frequents.

He proved his class material by posting his findings and analysis at relevant forums. And it paid off. Shortly, he was “spotted” by experts at McAfee, one of the world’s leading Internet security firms, which offered him a two month internship at its South East Asia office.

His journey began in March 2005: he started to research viruses affecting mobile phones on the Symbian OS. So far, he has discovered 100 viruses and 50 antidotes. To do this, he went to hacker forums to get information and virus samples. Then, he tested them on his own mobile phone, and posted his findings and analysis on certain Internet forums.

And at a young age, he is already a regular contributor to Mobile World magazine, a leading local mobile technology publication.

The message is clear: do what you believe in, it might take a lot of your time, sacrifices might be needed, be good at it (no, be world class good at it), success will follow.
