Timothy Tiah of Nuffnang featured on The Star TechCentral

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

I first wrote about Timothy Tiah about a year ago.

In The Star yesterday, Tim, 24 was featured in an article entitled “Tiah turns blogging into business venture”

Summary:
- Nuffnang has set up a branch in Singapore early this year
- Tim comes from a family of businessmen active in investment banking
- his family was very supportive of his decision to set up Nuffnang. In fact, his parents are his shareholders!
- Tim said: “there are about 100,000 bloggers in Malaysia. About 3,500 bloggers have registered with Nuffnang. In the next 12 months, we hope to have at least 20,000 members.”
- The article just said “hard work and setting goals have paid off handsomely for Tim,” but did not reveal how much he has made so far.
- Tim said “I have to force my colleagues to leave the office as they refused to, even after office hours.”
- Nuffnang has regular “criticism sessions”, where they do nothing but criticise. Also, they have regular movie and ice-cream sessions.

Daylight robbery via SMS spam in Malaysia

Monday, August 27th, 2007

This is an invitation for everybody to set up their own “SMS infoservice” to make a fast buck. And this has been going on for years.

As reported by New Straits Times, 27th Nov, these guys send you SMSes, and you have to pay for them! But each time it’s a few cents only (perhaps 15 sen), so you hardly notice. But the total that these many “mobile phone content providers” make runs into the millions. (more…)

John Lee (left) started Epsilon Translation in 2003 during his university days in Johor. According to his website, he started off from his rented room using flyers and notices as the only means for marketing. (more…)

Ramona Ali’s one woman show nets herself a five figure monthly income

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

…well, that’s my estimate.

She charges 30 sen per word if translating English to Malay, for non-technical stuff. If it’s the other way round, it’s 5 sen more expensive. And if it’s technical and legal stuff, 10 sen more expensive. (more…)

Hot-screensaver.com offers USD10 to review his website in >=50 words by midnight 19th August

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

I came across this offer on petalingstreet.org. As some other bloggers have mentioned, the domain name makes you think that this site is about screensavers only, but it turned out that it’s a personal blog of Neo. He came up with the name from his favourite TV show Thescreensavers. The site is close to 2 years old now.

Neo is 32 years old, an avid badminton player and currently works in the IT field in KL. He’s using PayPerPost to monetize his site.

From 14th to 19th August, Neo is offering USD10 each to the first 10 bloggers who reviews his site according to some simple rules. From the looks of it, I should be the 4th or 5th guy to do so.

Even if you miss out on being the first 10, don’t fret, as you’ll still be in the running to get VIP tickets to the Royal London Circus which is currently performing at Puchong Utama. Neo will select the 10 best reviews. Winners can then choose to watch any of the daily 8.30pm show (except Saturdays and public holidays). Of course, if you can always pass the ticket to a friend in KL if you can’t attend it yourself.

But hurry, it’s less than 24 hours before the contest ends!

Smorty.com joins pay per post fray

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

It is a well known fact that pay to blog sites are the easiest way to start earning money off blogging. There are many PayPerPost-like services now, and Smorty.com is one of them. Some are still skeptical as to whether the whole thing is for real – actually it’s very simple: it’s like a meeting room where advertisers and bloggers meet, and where deals are struck, where advertisers hire bloggers to give their opinions on the advertisers’ products and services, with a link back to the advertisers’ websites.

To put it another way, it’s another avenue where companies can promote their products and services: in this case, advertise on blogs

For blogs that are just starting out, smorty is a recommended place to earn their first internet-earned dollars. Blogs submitted are quickly approved, even those at PR0. I have taken my first Smorty opp a few days ago and I must say its approval, ans subsequent payment was quick and fuss-free.

In contrast, PayPerPost feels very crowded now and there are a lot of jostling for opps – you’d be lucky if you get a shot at one of their big money opps.

In conclusion, waste no time to join Smorty.com right now!

Ashop Commerce’s solution for hosted shopping cart software

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Budding entrepreneurs can check out Ashop Commerce, an Australian-based company offering complete solutions to enable one to sell merchandise online, including shopping cart software.

With the tagline “selling online has never been so easy”, they offer installation-free web based administration, fully customisable design and the ability to start selling online immediately.

They will even let one try their services out for 10 days, and unlike other providers, they won’t even ask for you credit card number for that purpose.

The cost of signing up is also affordable, directly competing with other, more established sites, starting at USD39.95 per month.

They claim to have helped thousands of merchants become successful, so that is a track record to be proud of.

The shopping carts have comprehensive features, including full integration with all major banks, gateways and third party processors including the popular PayPal. Checkout security via 128 bit SSL is built in.

In addition, their shopping carts are 100% Search Engine Optimised (SEO), meaning they will ensure products you offer rank as high as possible on major search engines. They also assured that since this is a dynamic field, it will be a continuous process.

Your website’s design will also be fully customisable without the usual restrictions, meaning you can create your own images and even flash animations.

Finally, they host all shopping carts on powerful and secure infrastructure, which includes fraud alerts, 24×7 monitoring, multiple daily backups and guaranteed 99.8% uptime.

Perhaps the final word is from a satisfied customer who said “It’s so easy my 12 year old son built my store as a class project!”

The USD500 PayPerPost opp that got away

Friday, August 17th, 2007

A few days ago PPP offered a USD500 (RM1,700) opp (I dont know if they offered more than one like this, or even a bigger amount perhaps?) without segmentation, meaning even PR0 and million-ranking Alexa blogs can also participate providing they’re fast enough, and lucky enough to grab it. The usual rates for such blogs are minimum USD5 and probably maximum USD20.

How often do you get paid RM1,700 to do a short 300-word essay?

I grabbed a screenshot of one.

Later in the night, I also saw several unsegmented USD50 opps: also taken unfortunately.

Chew Swee King: dropped out of college in 1982, now a millionaire mushroom planter

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

The Star reported on 12th August 2007 that Chew Swee King, 40 of Kg Grisek, near Muar, Johor has made his millions as Malaysia’s biggest mushroom producer and exporter. Naming his product “Grisek mushrooms”, presently he exports 30% of his mushrooms fresh to Singapore while the rest is presumably sold in this country. As for processed mushrooms, he’s exporting to India, Hong Kong, Brunei, Indonesia and Canada. His next plan is to export to the Middle East.

His company name is C&C Mushroom Cultivation Farm Company. It cultivates oyster mushrooms of various colours, abalones and Lingzhi mushrooms.

He dropped out of college in 1982. 4 years later, he attended a 2-week course on mushroom growing in 1986 at MARDI, conducted by Professor Mohammed Noor from UKM. Then he asked permission from his father to start a mushroom project on his land in 1987. He, with the help of 4 of his brothers, began to grow grey oyster mushrooms and Chew set up C&C.

He later bought the land from his father.

Today the farm produces about 150 tonnes of mushrooms a month.

According to Chew, there are around 400 mushroom growers in Malaysia, producing about RM30 million worth of mushroom products in a month.

A third of that amount comes from his company.
