The world’s most expensive haircut costs > RM86,000

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Ken Modestou must be the luckiest barber on earth.

He probably only needs to do one haircut a month and still able to live comfortably.

His client: the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah.

Mr Modestou has a hairdressing salon in London, but once every few weeks would fly over to Brunei, 7,000 miles away, to do the sultan’s hair, then fly back to London.

He has been the sultan’s barber for the last 16 years.

It was reported that on his most recent visit, the sultan paid more than USD21,000 – that would include first class airfare, hotel stay, luxury food etc.

Basically, it’s “just sign”.

That’s a brand new car per trim, with perhaps even orlando vacations thrown in!

Compare that to what you’d have to pay if you visit his barbershop in person: GBP30. And elsewhere in Britain, it’s even cheaper at between 3 and 4 pounds.

Petroleum Engineering graduates’ starting salary in the United States is more than RM24,000 per month

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

The top 15 highest-earning college degrees in the USA all have one thing in common – mathematics; and 12 of those are engineering degrees.

At the very top is petroleum engineering, which, at an average starting offer of USD83,121 (that’s more than RM24,000 per month!).

Why? Because oil is getting more difficult to find. Petroleum engineers try to locate oil and gas reservoirs, or finding ways to bring them to the surface.

Far behind at second place is the chemical engineer, more than USD20,000 per year adrift at a mere USD64,902 (RM19,000 per month).

Still, compared to developing nations’ starting salaries, these guys should have no problems with their baby showers.

The world’s most expensive helmet?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Felipe Massa suffered an accident during the Hungarian GP in July 2009, when part of the rear suspension of Rubens Barrichello’s car came loose on the track, bounced, and hit Massa’s helmet.

At first glance, the piece of metal measuring 5 cm in length and weighs less than a kilogram would seem harmless, but when one hits you as you are traveling at 230 km/h, it becomes deadly.

Fortunately he was wearing a Schuberth RF 1.7 bulletproof helmet, which undoubtedly saved his life.

The helmet reportedy cost USD30,000 (about RM100,000).

However, since the projectile hit part of the visor, arguably the weakest component of the helmet he was still hurt:

A video of the incident:

I wonder, do they also ensure Formula 1 car mats are also bulletproof???

Malaysia’s biggest ever defamation suit?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

In what could be the costliest defamation suit ever filed in Malaysia, on 24th August 2009 it was reported that MCA president and Malaysia’s Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat filed a RM500 million defamation suit against BN Backbenchers Club chairperson and Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing over the latter’s claim of giving RM10 million to the minister.

RM500 million!!! That would buy countless plasma mounts!

It was filed by a team of 9 lawyers at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

Apparently Ong will donate the RM500 million to charity and education if he wins.

On Tiong’s part, he said he had a witness to the exchange of cash.

The suit asked Tiong to:
(i) retract his statement
(ii) apologise via all major newspapers in the country.

Some people who own more than a billion dollars are not any happier

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

That’s what Craigslist founder Craig Newmark was quoted to have said. Yup, for some people having cellular phones is already a sure ticket to happiness :-)

Craigslist in its present form began in 1996, featuring local events in the San Francisco Bay Area. As of April 2009, craigslist has expanded to 570 cities in 50 countries, including Malaysia.

It currently has 28 staff.

The only source of revenue is paid job ads in some cities : most expensive being USD75 per ad for the San Francisco Bay Area.

It is the 22nd most visited website in the world, serving 50 million unique monthly visitors in the United States alone.

It has more than 40 million new classified advertisements every month: the leading classifieds service in ANY medium.

The company does not formally disclose financial information, but analysts and commentators have reported “possibly USD150 million in 2007.”

Europe’s biggest ever jackpot has been won

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Finally, on 22nd August 2009, after 7 months+, someone has won the SuperEnalotto, Italy’s state lottery draw – Europe’s biggest-ever jackpot payout: USD211.8 million.

It happened at the 88th draw, the lucky numbers: 10, 11, 27, 45, 79, 88.

The winning ticket was bought in a coffee bar in Bagnone, a Tuscan village with a population of 2,000. The person had spent only 2 euros to buy it.

Can you imagine the moment he found out he won it? If he were driving at that time, a Tacoma car accident lawyer could come in handy.

The prizemoney had snowballed since January, making Europe lottery-crazy.

Tickets could only be legally bought in Italy, prompting people from other countries to travel there just to buy them.

Over USD2 billion has been spent buying tickets since January: what a massive profit for the company!!!

And there’s another winnier – the Italian treasury – it will keep half of the total amount gambled.

Paula Abdul earned about RM17 million per season at American Idol

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Paula Abdul was a judge in probably the world’s most popular reality TV music competition show American Idol for 8 years (2002-2009).

However, on 4th August 2009, after “numerous contract negotiations,” she confirmed that she would not be returning for the 9th season.

It was reported that the reason for this was that she was unhappy that she had been earning only about USD5 million (about RM17 million) per season, and that she was earning less than Ryan Seacrest, the show’s host.

But Paula, RM17 million about RM1.4 million a MONTH! More than most of us will earn in several lifetimes!!!!!

It was reported that she had demanded as much as USD20 MILLION. Whoa, appetite suppressant needed! I mean, that’s a whopping RM70 million: almost RM6 million a month – even more than most of those overpaid EPL footballers!

When “only USD10 million” was offered, she quit and joined another show for an undisclosed fee.

She will be replaced by Victoria Beckham.
