Thursday, March 11th, 2010 |

According to Forbes in March 2010, there are 234 Asian billionaires, 62 of them first timers. That’s 23% of the world’s total of 1,011.

Their combined wealth is USD729 billion, a 100% increase, a much bigger increase than their European or American counterparts.

As expected, China has the most billionaires, at 64 (27 first timers). India has 49 while tiny Hong Kong proves to be a power puncher at 25.

Others:
Japan – 22
Taiwan – 18
Australia – 11
South Korea – 11
Malaysia – 8
Indonesia – 7
Kazakhstan – 5
Singapore – 4
New Zealand – 3
Thailand – 3

Pakistan – 1

The top 2 richest Asians are Indians: Mukesh Ambani (4th in world rankings), worth USD29 billion & Lakshmi Mittal, worth slightly less at USD 28.7 billion. 3rd is Li Ka-shing at USD21 billion. I wonder how well they pay for IT Jobs in their companies.

The same 3 also topped the Asian list last year.

Thursday, March 11th, 2010 |

According to Forbes in March 2010, worth of USD 1 billion, Mian Muhammad Mansha, 63 is Pakistan’s first ever billionaire.

He is the owner of Nishal Group, the country’s largest exporter of cotton clothes and also largest private employer.

In stark contrast to some miserly billionaires, he knows how to enjoy his wealth: a reputation for preferring only the best tailor made suits (and presumably bow ties) from Savile Row, London, apart from those made by Gucci, Chanel and Harrods.

The combined wealth of all of the world’s billionaires is worth USD3.6 trillion i.e. USD3,600 billion.

Carlos Slim Helu, the world’s richest man (2010)

Thursday, March 11th, 2010 |

According to Forbes on 10th March 2010, Bill Gates is the world’s richest man no more, albeit just.

Instead, it’s the man from Mexico at the top of the elite; there are 1,011 billionaires in the world.

Somehow, I think these 1,011 guys and gals won’t have any problem getting clarks shoes, even for free.

It seems the playing field is leveling off: it’s the 3rd different man in 3 consecutive years. Gates had held the mantle for most of the last 15 years.

Telecommunications mogul Helu is worth USD53.5 billion, USD500 million more than Gates, and up a staggering USD18.5 billion in a mere 12 moons. Riding on a 50% increase in Microsoft’s share value, Gates himself made an incredible USD13 billion from last year.

Gambler from China wins RM3.6mil in a day at Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 |

It was reported in The Star on 22nd February 2010 that many millionaires from China has descended to Resorts World, Singapore’s first ever casino.

One of them, a middle-aged, ill-tempered man got lucky at the baccarat table, winning the equivalent of RM3.6 million in a single day.

Perhaps the golden Buddha palm which he placed on the table on which he played helped.

On his entry to the casino, he deposited the equivalent of a cool RM240,000. Now that’s what I call a single premium instant life insurance quote paid in full!

Malaysian philanthropist Koon Yew Yin offers RM1 million annual grant to deserving students of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)

Monday, March 1st, 2010 |

Koon Yew Yin, 77 of Ipoh, Perak is a retired chartered engineer and renowned philanthropist and retired since 1983.

Annually, he gives RM1 milion to needy students of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) situated in Kampar, Perak. Students would only need to pay a small amount for the rental.

He has also financed an extension for the Salvation Army Home for orphans in Ipoh.

He does not even expect a thank you from the recipients, only a simple promise that they will help others so that “his work will continue even after he has died.”

In his own words:

You can keep making money but there is no meaning to life if you don’t know how to spend it because you can’t take any of it with you when you die. You must use it effectively to help others and create more happiness. It’s more satisfying.

So, while you work hard to earn your living by selling discount prescription eyeglasses or other legal means, keep what he said in mind.

He firmly believes that education is key to escaping the clutches of poverty, having undergone such experience himself.

He made his fortune by co-founding IJM Corporation Bhd, Gamuda Bhd and Mudajaya Group Bhd, three leading public-listed construction companies.

Friday, February 19th, 2010 |

It was reported by Bernama on 3rd August 2009 that the Sabah State Assembly has approved a pay increase of between 10 and 61 per cent for the Chief Minister, state cabinet members and assemblymen with effect from 1st June 2009.

The last adjustment was in 2000.

Chief Minister’s salary: RM15,730 per month (previously RM14,300)
Deputy Chief Minister: RM13,915 per month (previously RM12,650)
Minister & Speaker: RM10,890 (previously RM9,900)
Deputy Minister & Deputy Speaker: RM8,470 (previously RM7,700)
State legislative council members: RM5,300 (previously RM3,300)
Political secretary: RM3,630 (previously RM3,300)

I wonder if they have yearly raises. I think the salaries of the political secretaries are on the low side, so much so that if they ever need to produce club flyers, they’d think twice about the cost first.

Self made billionaires 35 years old or younger in 2009

Friday, February 19th, 2010 |

As reported by Forbes in September 2009, it seems only the following are still in the list of the youngest self made billionaires 35 years of age or younger:

Sergey Brin, 35, worth USD12 billion, Google co-founder

John Arnold, 35, worth USD2.7 billion, made his fortune from hedge funds

Fell off the list:

Larry Page, 36: overage!

Mark Zuckerberg, 25, but strangely he’s listed as worth USD2 billion in the “richest Americans list”, Facebook founder, company was valued at USD6.5 billion in May 2009.

Xiaofeng Peng, 34, was listed as worth USD2.5 billion in 2008, made his fortune from solar energy

Kostyantin Zhevago, 35, was listed as worth USD3.4 billion, made his fortune from banking & mining, the Ukraine’s youngest billionaire

Xian Yang, 35, was listed as worth USD1.6 billion, made his fortune from coal mining

Sameer Gehlaut, 35, was listed as worth USD1.2 billion, made his fortune from finance

Still, off the list or not, I’m sure they’d have little problem fending for themselves, unlike us mere mortals, who, for even seemingly trivial matters as finding treatment for hemorrhoids, would immediately think of the cost first.
