Money and true happiness

Friday, October 23rd, 2009 |

According to Choi Tuck Wo in his London Log published in The Star on 22nd October 2009, money may not necessarily be evil but the craving for it certainly seems so.

What we see around us is the power of money – it drives the world.

It is a double-edged sword: can be used to achieve good or bad.

Choi wrote that many street vagrants in London, given a choice, would accept money rather than food.

But money does not buy happiness, for Britons in London at least. The city has everything money can buy but the country is far behind fellow Europeans France and Spain when it comes to quality of life.

Annually, Londoners earn more than GBP10,000 more than the average European.

True happiness comes from within and depends on one’s perception: there are many depressed rich people.

Rich people who need to lose weight can afford to purchase all the weight loss products they need, but once they reach that ideal weight, it does not guarantee them a true and lasting happiness.

The old adage still holds true: true happiness is being in the company of one’s loved ones: friends and family. That can be interpreted as: money’s only worth it if it can be shared in a meaningful way with someone special.

How to make saving money a habit

Thursday, May 29th, 2008 |

A good advice: Don’t overindulge your “feeling poor” state of mind. Things like flipping through shopping catalogs and going to the shopping mall will definitely make you feel like wanting to buy things. Even if you can afford them, remember that the point is this: most of it is beyond your reach. Why not, instead, do things that offer a sense of well-being eg, invite friends over to your place, or take a walk at the park.

What credit card companies don’t want you to know

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 |

The top advice should always be: pay off all balance on your credit cards every month. Never go beyond the interest-free 30-day grace period. Hence, you get to use the credit card’s money without paying them anything for the privilege. Do this, and you will save thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of dollars in needless interest payments.

Don’t throw your used car batteries: lead prices have doubled since early 2007

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 |

Used car battery lead is the new gold, and is the new target for dumpster divers and thieves alike.

Most of us throw away our used car batteries or simply leave them at the mechanics’ or battery dealers’ premises.

In May 2006 I bought my batteries for RM140. Earlier this month, buying from the same shop, it cost me RM210. The guy said if I came in a little later and the new stock comes in, I would have to cough up RM250.

There has been an increase in the prices of lead on the international market, and used car batteries have lead inside them.

According to The Star’s newsreport:

A senior officer of a car battery factory said the price of lead on the London Metal Exchange had shot up from US$1,600 (RM5,325.82) a metric tonne early this year to US$3,600 (RM11,983) this month.

He said one could sell a used battery from a car at between RM30 and RM40 while the price for a used lorry battery was between RM150 and RM200.

A quick way to make some money off Paris Hilton

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007 |

Paris Hilton’s belongings stored in a 6,000 square feet storage room displayed online. Price to view: USD40. It went online 24th January. In 2 days the site allegedly already had 1.2 million viewers, and the owner of the site became a millionaire literally overnight. 6 days later, Paris sued to bring it down. Her lawsuit alleges defendants Nabil and Nabila Haniss paid USD2,775 for the contents of the storage unit and later sold the items for a whopping USD10 million to entrepreneur Bardia Persa, who created the site.

But this one guy posted at Usenet’s alt.gossip.celebrities on 28th Jan: “Why pay USD40 for the site membership, you can get all the content for free at www.parisexposed.org” That site turned out to be some kind of Made For Adsense (MFA) site. That domain probably cost him USD2 and he used domain redirection to point to either a free webspace or his existing webspace. (more…)
