Probably the first Malaysian man running an online business selling women’s lingerie

Jerad Solomon, 33 was a finance manager / accountant when he decided to take the plunge and do what most men in Malaysia would probably never even dream about: sell women’s intimate wear. Online.

The hardest part was probably breaking the news to his wife, Hemala, who was understandably dumbfounded. He had never even bought any lingerie for his wife, and he’s thinking of quitting a stable job to sell lingerie??? Fortunately, after a while she gave him the green light.

But the big question remains: there are millions of others things to sell - why lingerie? He gave several reasons, but to me the most compelling one is this: Malaysians (and Asians in general) like to buy their intimate wear privately rather than in shops. And what can be more private than purchasing stuff online?

He quit his job in 2005. Apparently, his job demanded so much of his time that he could not concentrate on his accounting job and setting the foundations for his online venture at the same time. To put food on the table during that time, he did freelance consulting work. The rest of his time is spent on learning about the lingerie trade, of which he knew little about, if at all. Amongst other things, he had to learn the jargon used for lingerie designs and also the materials used for the products. That, and the technicalities of setting up and maintaining its website. That proved to be not trivial - they had to tone down the look of the website to ensure they don’t give the “wrong idea”.
As of this month, www.chicwear.com.my has been online for 6 months which he set up with 2 partners.
Prices start from RM129, with the silk satin pieces costing a little more than the polyester silk ones. Most of the lingerie is manufactured in Europe and America and come in various designs such as baby-doll, nightdress, dressing robe and teddies.

The website is done on Microsoft platform and the credit card payment gateway is worldpay.com.
At the same time, Solomon is operating the webhosting business capxion.com.
