The highest paid actors in Asia are not Bollywood or Hong Kong stars
….is not Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi, Jet Li, or any of the Japanese, and of course definitely not Mawi.
It is the Koreans. According to the Washington Post in August 2006:
Korean male celebrities are now among the highest-paid actors outside Hollywood. According to the South Korean media, “Winter Sonata” star Bae Yong Jun — whose character stood by his first love through 10 years of car accidents and amnesia — is now charging USD5 million [RM17.5 million] a film, the steepest price anywhere in Asia. In a few short years, Bae is said to have accumulated a merchandising and acting-fee empire worth an estimated USD100 million [RM350 million]. At least nine other Korean male stars earn more than USD10 million [RM35 million] a year, according to a list published in June by the Seoul-based Sports Hankook newspaper.

So it seems that all the fake tears and slow dialogue, typical in Korean dramas have been worth it.
The winds of change are blowing. Male celebrities from South Korea - “sensitive men but totally ripped” - is what Asian women want. So martial arts movie heroes (read: Jet Li) and the stereotypical macho men of mainstream Asian television (read: Tony Jaa, that Thai tough guy) are passe.
